Packing List

In order to prepare you for the 18 Inch Journey, we have built a thorough packing list. We are asking that you read through these details and bring everything on this list (unless it is marked as optional).

CLOTHING

We will have many occasions to dress up during the journey and want you to feel prepared. While you don’t need do dress fancily, we encourage you to bring a couple of nicer shirts that you’d wear to something like a dinner party. Additionally, please bring a pair of black pants, a white button down, and suspenders.

At least 2 sets of workout clothing (we will be exercising together twice a week)

2 sets of clothes you can wear to clean or do outdoor work in

Tennis shoes/sneakers for exercise

Sweaters/sweatshirts for wearing inside during sessions. The air conditioning can make our spaces chilly!

Clothing for spring and summer weather. The temperatures will range from the 50’s to potential low 90’s during your time here (Fahrenheit). We recommend bringing clothing you can layer throughout the seasons change.

Raincoat or umbrella, and rain boots or shoes you can get wet.  We do a lot of walking from building to building and when it rains, it can be a muddy experience! We highly recommend the umbrella option, as you’ll regularly be carrying books and other items on your person that would also be helpful to keep dry.

A bathing Suit

Walking Shoes. Please bring shoes that can handle daily walking on gravel and clay. Our land has a lot of Carolina red clay, which can and will stain white shoes over time.

TOILETRIES

  • Towels (we recommend at least 1 bath towel and 1 lake towel)

  • Personal Toiletries - shampoo, body soap, toothpaste, etc.

  • *Please note that there will be designated times during the school for you to go off campus and purchase essential things like toiletry refills. We recommend traveling with enough to last you the first 2 weeks of the school, and beyond that you could purchase more whilst here. You can also order things from amazon or online stores and have them shipped to our campus.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Bible

  • Pens & Pencils

  • Journal

  • Credit/Debit Card (see details in Things to Note Section)

  • Wrist Watch

  • Laundry Bag : There is not space in your cabin for you to bring a structured laundry hamper, but we do recommend that you bring a mesh or cotton bag for dirty laundry. This will help you store your dirty clothes under your bed, and will serve you as you walk outdoors to and from your laundry room.

  • Instrument : you are welcome to bring ONE musical instrument. You will need to store this in your cabin.

  • Art Supplies: You are welcome to bring art supplies for personal use, but all supplies for classes will be provided. If you bring personal supplies you are responsible for storing these in your cabin.

OPTIONAL:

  • Sunglasses

  • Sunscreen

  • Bug spray

  • Book light

  • Folder for loose papers - throughout your school you will receive hand-outs and other loose papers. If you would like to bring a folder to keep these in, feel free!

  • Laptop : You are not required to bring a laptop or iPad, but you are welcome to bring it. In our school, we have a high emphasis on unplugging, and while you will mainly be taking notes by hand, there may be some instances where you are assigned projects where you are allowed to use a laptop. If you’d prefer to fulfill an assignment by typing, you are welcome to prepare for that by bringing a laptop or iPad with you.

  • Shower Shoes (optional, but we encourage the men to bring these, as your bathrooms are a short walk from your cabin)

  • Outlet converter (for internationals)

THINGS TO NOTE:

  • We provide your bedding - this includes bedsheets, one pillow and a blanket. You do not need to pack any of these. If you would like to bring an extra pillow or blanket, you are welcome to.

  • There is limited storage in your cabin, so please pack with an awareness of this. You will have (approximately) 2 dresser drawers, space for toiletries, one medium size bin under your bed, and a small section for hanging clothing. Hangers are provided.

  • You will have the option of doing laundry once a week. This day will be scheduled for you.

  • We have a small cafe available for you to purchase snacks and drinks throughout the school. This is stocked with things like granola bars, nuts, chips, candies, soda, etc. We also have a Maker Coffee Stand where we sell espresso and nitro coffee drinks throughout the school, which we recommend bringing spending money for if you’d like to partake of these. You can buy things from the cafe with a credit/debit card. Again, we do provide 3 meals - but if you anticipate getting hungry often or wanting a late night snack, please account for funds needed to purchase these items.

  • When you pack your suitcase, please leave EXTRA space available to take home items that you acquire here. You will be taking home several things from the Journey - journals, books, art projects, etc. We encourage you to either bring an extra bag or save a large section in your suitcase for these things.  You will have an art project that is a wooden panel sized 2 x 2.5 feet to take home, and certain collectives have fragile projects (large framed photos or prints, fragile pottery pieces, etc).
